Practice Areas

THE ZOECKLER FIRM, LLC is a small law firm providing legal services to local governments, institutions and business clients throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area and the state. The Firm was established in 2014 by Bob Zoeckler and Tom Bowman following over 70 years of combined experience upon the reorganization of their former firm, Maddox, Nix, Bowman & Zoeckler, PC. Our practice areas are local government zoning and land use, ad valorem tax and eminent domain.

The Firm’s local governmental zoning practice embraces all aspects of land use law, including rezonings, variances, special use permits, building permits, historic preservation, code drafting, and related advice and counsel.

Past and present clients include Atlanta area local governments on a case by case basis, developers, institutions, and certain neighborhood organizations. The Firm also provides code drafting services, usually in association with planning consultants, for a wide variety of metro local governments. Recent assignments have included the SPI-12 Zoning District in Buckhead, assisting with charter revisions addressing comprehensive plan priorities in the City of New Orleans, the MLK Landmark District in Atlanta, and revisions to the City of Decatur’s zoning code. Mr. Bowman’s of counsel practice areas are local governmental condemnation and ad valorem tax issues, in addition to local governmental zoning matters. He has represented a variety of private clients and local governments over the past 40+ years of practice.

The Firm often partners with other experienced lawyers and professional individuals in other practice areas when needed to achieve comprehensive results for its clients. Real estate and corporate transactional matters and contract work are common examples. We also work closely with a select group of professional planners, permit specialists, engineers, traffic consultants, and other disciplines to help our clients coordinate issues outside of our particular practice areas.

Pro bono projects are an important part of the Firm’s mission, and have included counsel by Mr. Zoeckler to several Clarkston institutions that provide services to the thriving refugee community in the Clarkston area.
